You don't have to be stuck with a referral or a 9-to-5 appointment to get a bulk-billed doctor. Health-related emergencies and sudden sickness are some of the reasons you need immediate medical attention. If, for example, your fever rises after midnight or you get other symptoms over the weekend, finding an after-hours bulk-billing GP is one way to ease both medical and financial worries. The Australian government acknowledges that care is necessary outside usual business hours, which is why it has introduced/funded certain structures to support after-hours consultations.
It will be quite useful to you as a patient when you are looking for a doctor at midnight to understand how these financial safety nets work. For a basic understanding of how the national rebate system works, we advise reading our comprehensive Bulk Billing & Medicare Guide. This pillar resource outlines the core mechanics of how the government subsidises primary care.
But when it gets dark outside, the rules for your Medicare night claim will be a little different. Doctors are being incentivised through different billing codes to work unsociable hours so that communities have access to urgent medical interventions when local daytime clinics are closed. If you would like to know how exactly these subsidies work, you can check out what bulk billing means for your wallet.
MBS Time Brackets for After Hours
The Medicare Benefits Schedule groups medical consultations by complexity and exact time and day of consultation. The aim is to ensure that an after-hours rebate under the MBS is paid only if the consultation occurs within strictly defined time brackets.
We won't use lengthy paragraphs to tell you about those rules, but here is a mere breakdown of when after-hours officially start:
- On weekdays (Monday to Friday), the after-hours period is considered to start at 8:00 PM and extend until 8:00 AM the next day.
- Saturday after-hours period starts at 1:00 PM and continues through the night.
- Sundays and Public Holidays are treated as after-hours for an entire day.
- Unsociable Hours refer to 11:00 PM to 7:00 AM any day of the week, and there is an even more premium tier for consultations done during these times.
Requested codes used by doctors will directly correspond to these timeframes. Our common MBS item numbers guide provides explanations of these codes. For official documentation on billing definitions of public holidays across different states, refer to the Department of Health and Aged Care, which is the main regulatory source.
Booking After-Hours Appointments
It is critical that, when you most urgently need a medical service, you know how to get the right one. Typically, patients have only two primary pathways for after-hours care: their local clinic's on-call doctor or a deputised medical service.
To learn more about the deputised services we offer, including virtual care, you can visit our comprehensive After-Hours Urgent Care hub. If you or other members of the family are restricted to the house due to severe symptoms or mobility issues, you can also find the eligibility criteria for a Home Doctor Visit.
Note that a medical service being available at night does not necessarily make it bulk-billing. How much a clinic charges is entirely at their discretion, and they may prioritise families for bulk billing during the day, while their nighttime policies involve private gap fees that cover the costs of running overnight.
13CURE Operations and Late-Night Billing
To ensure our medical teams are ready to respond to people who suddenly get sick, 13CURE operates under a highly customised, highly restricted model.
- Operating Hours & Scope: 13CURE supports telehealth after-hours for urgent cases only. We open for the management of non-emergency cases from 11 PM to 7 AM daily.
- Continuity of Care: Managing health through regular check-ups and prescriptions is essential, and therefore, it is highly recommended that you visit your regular GP for non-urgent cases.
- Targeted Bulk Billing: In our case, bulk billing is reserved for patients who come through our partner medical practices deputised by 13CURE, as well as for infants under 1 year, homeless individuals, or those living in a disaster area.
- Private Billing: The remaining patients using our 11 PM to 7 AM urgent telehealth service are charged privately.
- Administrative Requests: Our time to see patients is limited to after-hours for urgent cases. Still, we do see patients privately for Medical Certificates and similar documentation, which are charged at a private fee.

Geographic Service Areas
We want to provide great urgent virtual care to the communities we cover. At present, we focus on those communities throughout New South Wales and Queensland.
If you happen to be living in other states and are looking for localised after-hours support in Western Australia or the Northern Territory, we do not provide services in these areas. Still, we will come and keep you updated on plans. For urgent health advice in areas outside our coverage, state-based resources like WA Health can help you find local late-night facilities.
