Bulk Billing for Families and Dependents

bulk billing and Medicare guide for families

Looking after a family's health really does take some juggling. From regularly scheduling the kids' vaccinations to dealing with unexpected nighttime fevers, parents have to be ready to get help from healthcare professionals at any time. To make the most of the healthcare system in Australia, one would need to understand how the national health scheme supports family GP visits in NSW, as well as other medical services available throughout the country.

Parents who can grasp the nuances of family Medicare can count on their families receiving the necessary medical help without worry. A good way to get familiar with government rebates applying generally is to check out our comprehensive bulk billing and Medicare guide.

When a medical centre offers bulk billing to families, they agree to accept the government rebate amount as the full price for a consultation. The bottom line for patients is that they do not have to pay anything out of pocket at the time of the appointment. To get a clear picture of the whole concept of bulk billing assignment of benefit, you could go through our guide on what bulk billing means.

Children Under Medicare

Perhaps the biggest strength of the national health scheme lies in its support of healthcare for young children. One way to do this is to offer money to clinics if they do not charge for children's services. While adult individuals may sometimes be asked to pay a fee in addition to the government rebate, some practices adhere to the rule of bulk billing all regular appointments for children under 16.

In fact, this means a child's GP rebate is sufficient to cover the full doctor's fee for standard daytime appointments. When your child gets sick, and you feel the need to get them medical attention without delay, then it is only fair that the child's health should not be compromised due to budgetary constraints. And, in a similar vein, through deputised medical services, offering medical attention to families in their home, you will also be wondering about how home doctors for kids relate to these very same Medicare policies.

Carers and Dependents

The care of a family does not stop at just young children. It is a fact that many people in Australia are into caring for an elderly parent or disabled relatives, etc., both full-time and part-time. The healthcare management of these persons often requires determining the impact of their government status on clinic billing.

In certain cases, adult dependents also have some very specific government-issued cards that determine their billing status. For instance, if you are responsible for someone who has a Pensioner Concession Card and a Health Care Card, these cards might be your key to reduced fees or even full bulk billing at several daytime practices.

If you are in charge of a dependent's care and do so remotely, knowing the ins and outs of how bulk billing works with telehealth would be very beneficial, especially for family members with mobility problems or those living in aged care settings. Depending on the carer allowances and healthcare support for dependents, you should always check directly with the Services Australia portal.

Family Safety Net

Even if bulk-billing services are plentiful, families who are heavy users of medical services will eventually incur some out-of-pocket expenses. The government, however, having the welfare of Australian families in mind, has not only set up bulk billing but also put in place family safety-net thresholds to limit extensive medical expenditure.

As long as a family signs up as a single unit, their combined medical expenses become subject to a unified threshold. When this threshold is reached during the calendar year, a higher Medicare rebate becomes available for out-of-hospital services, effectively reducing family gap fees for the rest of that year. Our Medicare safety-net explained will further help you understand how this safeguard works for your budget.

Do you know that you can easily check how close your family is to the threshold by using the Internet? If you are new to the online process, getting to know how to claim Medicare rebates online might just be the thing to help you arrange your family's health data with the government. 13CURE After-Hours Care for Families

It's well known that children fall ill at the most inopportune times, most likely in the middle of the night. 13CURE is a company that has developed an after-hours medical service to help you during the time gap when your usual family medical centre is closed.

13CURE offers after-hours telehealth care intervention for serious cases only, with non-emergency after-hours cases managed from 11 PM to 7 AM daily. Since a child's health requires long-term continuity of care, non-urgent cases, vaccinations, and regular checks should be done by your child's usual GP.

Bulk billing by 13CURE of urgent telehealth services after hours is likely only when the patient is from one of their deputised partner practices, an infant under 1 year old, homeless, or from a disaster area. For all remaining patients, billing is private. This means that if your infant (under 12 months of age) suddenly becomes ill in the middle of the night, our urgent telehealth service is bulk-billed.

In general, all services are provided by 13CURE on a private billing basis. Also, we not only deal with urgent patients after hours, but we also provide Medical Certificates and related documentation privately, which parents may need to apply for carer's leave at their workplace.

Geographic Service Areas

We aim to provide urgent telehealth treatment to all communities within our active service footprint, primarily in New South Wales and Queensland.

If you are in Victoria, Western Australia, or if you are looking for an after-hours GP in Adelaide, unfortunately,we don't provide services in this area. Still, we plan to come in future and will keep you updated. This will avoid any compliance issues in future.

13CURE does bulk-bill only for infants under 1 year of age. Standard private billing applies to all other children over 12 months of age for our 11 PM 7 AM urgent telehealth service, unless they are enrolled with a deputised partner practice.

You can register your family as a unit under the Medicare Safety Net program. The out-of-pocket costs of all members of the family that have been registered will then be accumulated towards a combined threshold, enabling you to make use of the safety net benefit faster.

Not so. Medical certificates and all documentation at 13CURE are billed privately. Payment for the private consultation is required to obtain a certificate confirming that you were caring for a sick dependent.

Typically, during the daytime, local clinics may accept the Medicare rebate as full payment for children under 16 years of age. So, the standard doctor's appointment has been paid in full by the government, leaving no bill for parents. If you are unsure about the clinic's bulk billing policy, please ask before booking.
